Acetic Acid (Otic) is a prescription medication used to treat infections in the ear canal. Acetic acid will not treat an inner ear infection (also called otitis media)

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Acetic Acid (Otic)?
Common side effects of Acetic Acid (Otic) include:
- mild stinging or burning with the first use.
Serious side effects of Acetic Acid (Otic) include:
- hives.
- difficult breathing.
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- severe burning or other irritation after using the ear drops.
Rare side effects of Acetic Acid (Otic)include:
- none
Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:
- Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.
- Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
- Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of Acetic Acid (Otic)?
Adult and pediatric dosage
Solution, Otic:
- Generic: 2 % (15 mL)
Otitis externa
Adult dosage
- Otic: Insert saturated wick of cotton; keep moist 24 hours by adding 3 to 5 drops every 4 to 6 hours; remove wick after 24 hours and instill 5 drops 3 to 4 times daily.
Pediatric dosage
- Children above 3 years and Adolescents:
- Otic: Insert saturated wick of cotton; keep moist 24 hours by adding 3 to 5 drops every 4 to 6 hours; remove wick after 24 hours and instill 5 drops 3 to 4 times daily.

What Are Warnings and Precautions for Acetic Acid (Otic)?
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Acetic Acid Otic Solution or any of the ingredients. A perforated tympanic membrane is considered a contraindication to the use of any medication in the external ear canal.
- a hole in your ear drum (ruptured ear drum).

Cautions
- You should not use acetic acid if you have a hole in your ear drum (ruptured ear drum)
- This medicine is for use only in the ears. Avoid getting the medicine in your eyes, mouth, and nose, or on your lips. Rinse with water if this medicine gets in or on these areas.
- Do not use other ear medications unless your doctor tells you to.
- Acetic acid should not be used to treat a child younger than 3 years old.
