Alitretinoin Topical

Alitretinoin Topicalis a prescription medication used for the treatment of skin lesions or sores associated with AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma.

Common side effects of Alitretinoin Topicalinclude:

• rash,
• itching,
• redness, or other skin irritation,
• skin peeling or flaking,
• scabs or crusting, and
• pain or burning of treated skin

Serious side effects of Alitretinoin Topicalinclude:

• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• severe burning, pain, or irritation after using this medicine,
• blistering,
• drainage,
• oozing, and
• severe redness or swelling

Rare side effects of Alitretinoin Topicalinclude:

• none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

Adult dosage

• Initial: Dose once daily
• May increase the dose after 2 weeks; maximum recommended dose is 300 mg/10 mg/25 mg

• Hypersensitivity to retinoids
• Concomitant systemic anti-Kaposi's sarcoma treatment
• Pregnancy

Cautions

• Minimize treated area exposure to sun or other sources of UV
• Not for concurrent use with DEET products
• Use precautions for handling and disposal
• Safety not established in children or the elderly
• Handle with caution and dispose of appropriately

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug is available.
