What Is Aminohippurate Sodium and How Does It Work?

Aminohippurate Sodium is a diagnostic agent used for the estimation and measurement of renal function (effective renal plasma flow and tubular secretion).

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Aminohippurate Sodium?

Common side effects of Aminohippurate Sodium  include:

  1. a sensation of warmth, and
  2. desire to defecate or urinate during or shortly after infusion

Serious side effects of Aminohippurate Sodium include:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • swelling,
  • itching,
  • rash,
  • night sweats,
  • hot flashes,
  • flushing,
  • tingling,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting, and
  • muscle cramps

Rare side effects of Aminohippurate Sodium include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Aminohippurate Sodium?

Adult dosage

Injectable solution

  • 20%

Renal Function Diagnostic

Adult dosage

  • The goal is to maintain a plasma concentration of 2 mg/dL
  • Load 6-10 mg/kg, infuse at 10-24 mg/min

Cautions

  • Low cardiac reserve
  • Latex-sensitive individuals: Vial stopper contains dry natural latex
  • Administer IV solutions with caution to patients with low cardiac reserve (rapid increase in plasma volume may precipitate congestive heart failure

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy.
  • Lactation
    • Excretion in milk unknown; use with caution
