What Is Aminosalicylic Acid and How Does It Work?

Aminosalicylic Acid is a prescription medication used for the treatment of tuberculosis in combination with other active agents.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Aminosalicylic Acid?

Common side effects of Aminosalicylic Acid include:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea, and
  • abdominal pain

Serious side effects of Aminosalicylic Acid include:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • severe dizziness,
  • fever,
  • itching,
  • black or bloody stools,
  • vomit that looks like coffee grounds,
  • rash followed by a fever,
  • dark urine,
  • persistent nausea or vomiting,
  • abdominal pain,
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice),
  • rash, and
  • itching

Rare side effects of Aminosalicylic Acid include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Aminosalicylic Acid?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Oral granules, delayed-release

  • 4 g/packet

Tuberculosis

Adult dosage

  • 4 g orally thrice daily

Pediatric dosage

  • 200-300 mg/kg/day orally divided into 2-4 equal doses; not to exceed 10 g/day

    • dichlorphenamide
  • Aminosalicylic Acid has serious interactions with no other drugs.

    • benazepril
    • dapsone topical
    • voclosporin
    • warfarin
  • Aminosalicylic Acid has minor interactions with no other drugs.
