How Do Ethanolamine Derivatives Work?

Ethanolamine derivatives are drugs used to treat pruritis (itching) caused by allergic reactions and insomnia (difficulty sleeping). They are one among the six structural classes of H-1 receptor antagonists and work by blocking H-1 receptors which inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells. 

Mast cells release histamine as an immune response against allergens. Histamine-a chemical found in some of the body’s cells is responsible for inflammation and causes many of the symptoms associated with allergies such as itching, sneezing, and runny nose. 

Some drugs may cross the blood-brain barrier and competitively inhibit the H-1 receptor. This produces anticholinergic effects that decrease bodily functions such as labyrinthine function, block chemoreceptor trigger zone, decrease vestibular stimulation, and cause sedation.
