What Is Bacitracin Ophthalmic and How Does It Work?

Bacitracin Ophthalmic is a prescription medication used to treat ocular (eye) infections.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Bacitracin Ophthalmic?

Common side effects of Bacitracin Ophthalmic include:

  • Mild eye redness or itching; or
  • Puffy eyelids.

Serious side effects of Bacitracin Ophthalmic include:

  • Rash, 
  • Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), 
  • Chest tightness, 
  • Severe dizziness, 
  • Trouble breathing.

Rare side effects of Bacitracin Ophthalmic include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Bacitracin Ophthalmic?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Ointment

  • 500 unit/g (3.5 g)

Ocular Infections

Adult and pediatric dosage

  • Apply 1/4 to 1/2 ribbon every 3-4 hours or every 8-12 hours for mild to moderate infections for 7-10 days

Cautions

  • This drug should not be used in deep-seated ocular infections or in those that are likely to become systemic
  • This may result in the overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi, particularly Candida
  • If new infections develop during treatment appropriate antibiotics or chemotherapy should be instituted
  • Not recommended for use above 1 week unless directed by the prescriber

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy.
