Dr. Anand received MBBS degree from Medical College Amritsar, University of Punjab. After graduating, he completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Postgraduate Institute of medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. He then went to Oxford (UK) for training in Gastroenterology and also obtained the DPhil degree at Oxford University. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh).
Dr. Anand is in active practice in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Anand is professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He has served as Chief of Hepatology, VA Medical Center, from 2003 to 2007.

Dr. Anand has published over 170 research publications and 25 book chapters. He has been a member of the editorial board of the international advisory board of several medical journals including Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Tropical Gastroenterology, GUT, World Journal of Gastroenterology, FirstConsult, and World Journal of Hepatology.
