Debra Houry, MD, MPH

Dr. Debra Houry, MD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and in the Department of Behavioral Science and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health. She is currently the Director for the Center for Injury Control, Rollins School of Public Health and teaches several courses on violence and injury prevention at Emory. She is a graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine and completed her emergency medicine residency training at Denver Health Medical Center where she served as chief resident. She joined the faculty at Emory five years ago immediately after completing her residency training.

Her primary research interests are in the prevention of violence against women, mental health issues related to violence, public health, and emergency care. She is currently the Principal Investigator on two federally funded grants totaling 1.6 million dollars, one entitled "Computer based screening for Domestic Violence and Mental Health Symptoms", the other "Safety and Effectiveness of Computer screening for Domestic Violence Victims and Perpetrators". Dr. Houry has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on injury prevention and violence. Dr. Houry has been the recipient of several national awards, including the Jay Drotman Award, given annually by the American Public Health Association for the most outstanding young public health professional in the country. She was also awarded the American College of Emergency Physicians Young Investigator Award, Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Young Investigator Award, and the American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award. She serves on several national committees for the American College of Emergency Physicians, Society for Academic Emergency Physicians, and the Academy for Violence and Abuse. She is an Associate editor for Annals of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Houry also chaired the national meeting for the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in 2006 and was re-appointed to this role for May 2007.
