Laurel Mellin, MA, RD, is an associate clinical professor of family and community medicine and pediatrics at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine. She is the director of the Institute for Health Solutions. Her primary expertise is in obesity treatment for both children and adults.
She developed The Solution Method for the treatment of adult obesity and the Shapedown Program for treating pediatric eating and weight issues. Both programs are based on a "whole body" approach to obesity, involving lifestyle changes, developmental skills training, stress management, and medical care.
Her research focuses on developmental skills training and its effectiveness in improving appetite regulation, addictive behaviors, and long-term maintenance of weight loss.
Mellin is the author of The Solution: 6 Winning Ways to Permanent Weight Loss and The Shapedown Program. Her most recent book is The Pathway.
Mellin lectures extensively to health professionals and self-help groups and has appeared on Oprah, Today, Good Morning America, and the CBS Evening News. Her work has been featured in Time, Life, Newsweek, Fortune, Health, Shape, and U.S. News & World Report.
