As medical editor-in-chief at WebMD Health, Michael W. Smith, MD, is the physician in charge of medical news and features. He reviews multiple peer-reviewed journals and medical conferences in all specialties and recommends stories to be published on WebMD Health. In addition, Smith oversees a staff of full-time editors, writers, and physicians, and he edits and verifies the medical accuracy of daily articles.
Smith graduated from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Ga., in 1994 and then did his internship in internal medicine at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He finished his internal medicine residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, doing his last year as chief resident. He became board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and then entered private practice as a primary care physician. After almost two years of practicing in a primary care network in Atlanta, Smith joined the staff of WebMD full-time.
