Butenafine is a prescription as well as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication used for the treatment of fungal infections such as tinea pedis, ringworm & jock itch, and tinea (pityriasis) versicolor.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Butenafine?
Common side effects of Butenafine include:
- burning
- stinging
- irritation
- redness
- itching at the application site
- worsening of the skin condition
Serious side effects of Butenafine include:
- severe burning/stinging and itching at the site of application
Rare side effects of Butenafine include:
- none
Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:
- Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors
- Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
- Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, light-headedness, or passing out

What Are the Dosages of Butenafine?
Adult and pediatric dosage
Cream
- 1%
Tinea Pedis
Adult dosage
- Cream: Apply to the affected areas twice daily for at least 1 week; not to exceed 4 weeks
- Gel: Apply to the affected area twice daily for 7 days
- Solution: Apply to the affected area twice daily for 7 days
Pediatric dosage
- Children younger than 12 years: Safety & efficacy not established
- Children older than 12 years: As in adults
Ringworm & Jock Itch (Tinea Corporis, Tinea Cruris)
Adult dosage
- Cream: Apply to the affected area once or twice daily for at least 1 week; not to exceed 4 weeks
- Gel: Apply to the affected area once daily for 7 days
- Solution: Apply to the affected area once daily for 7 days in tinea corporis and tinea cruris; apply to affected areas twice daily for 7 days in tinea versicolor
Pediatric dosage
- Children younger than 12 years: Safety & efficacy not established
- Children older than 12 years: As in adults
Tinea (Pityriasis) Versicolor
Adult dosage
- Apply once daily for 2 weeks
