Carboprost Tromethamine is a prescription medication used to treat Refractory Postpartum Uterine Bleeding and for abortion.

What Are Dosages of Carboprost Tromethamine?
Adult dosage
Injectable solution
- 250mcg/mL
Abortion
Adult dosage
- Initial: 250 mcg IM; then repeat as needed every 1.5-3.5 hours, or
- An initial, optional test dose of 100 mcg IM; then increase the dose to 500 mcg if the response is inadequate with 250 mcg doses
- No more than 1200 mcg total dose or 2 days of continuous administration
Refractory Postpartum Uterine Bleeding
Adult dosage
- Initial 250 mcg IM, repeat as needed every 15-90 minutes
- No more than 2000 mcg or 8 doses

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Carboprost Tromethamine?
Common side effects of Carboprost Tromethamine include:
- mild nausea,
- vomiting,
- diarrhea,
- mild fever,
- chills,
- flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling),
- cough,
- hiccups,
- headache, and
- mild pelvic pain or menstrual-type cramps
Serious side effects of Carboprost Tromethamine include:
- hives,
- difficult breathing,
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
- severe pelvic pain,
- cramping,
- vaginal bleeding,
- lightheadedness,
- shortness of breath,
- severe nausea,
- vomiting,
- diarrhea,
- severe headache,
- blurred vision,
- buzzing in the ears,
- anxiety,
- confusion, and
- chest pain

- Hypersensitivity
- Acute pelvic inflammatory disease
- Active cardiac, pulmonary, renal, or hepatic disease

Cautions
- History of glaucoma or raised IOP
- Asthma, hypertension/hypotension, cardiovascular disease
- Transient fever observed with treatment possibly as a result of carboprost’s effect on hypothalamic thermoregulation
- Caution in patients with anemia, jaundice, renal impairment, hepatic impairment diabetes, or epilepsy
- To decrease GI side effects pretreatment or concomitant use with antiemetic and antidiarrheal agents recommended
- Not for IV
- Rare cases of cardiovascular collapse were reported with prostaglandins
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy.
- Lactation: Excretion in milk unknown.
