Ceftibuten is a prescription medicine used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Ceftibuten?

Common side effects of Ceftibuten include:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • stomach upset, and
  • headache

Serious side effects of Ceftibuten include:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • dark urine,
  • persistent nausea or vomiting,
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice),
  • black stool,
  • change in the amount of urine,
  • joint pain,
  • fever,
  • persistent sore throat,
  • easy bleeding,
  • unusual bruising,
  • tiredness,
  • fast or pounding heartbeat,
  • seizure,
  • mood changes,
  • confusion,
  • president diarrhea,
  • abdominal pain or cramping,
  • blood or mucus in the stool,
  • white patches in the mouth,
  • change in vaginal discharge, and
  • severe dizziness

Rare side effects of Ceftibuten include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Ceftibuten?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Capsule

  • 400 mg

Oral suspension

  • 90 mg/5mL
  • 180 mg/5mL

Infections

Adult dosage

  • 400 mg orally every day for 10 days

Pediatric dosage

  • Aged below 6 months: Safety and efficacy not established
  • 6-12 years old or less than 45 kg: 9 mg/kg orally every day; 400 mg/day orally for 10 days maximum  
  • Aged above 12 years old or above 45 kg: As in adults

    • temocillin
    • ticarcillin
    • voclosporin
    • warfarin
    • zinc

Cautions

  • Diabetics: oral suspension contains 1 g sucrose/tsp
  • Modify dosage in severe renal impairment; prolonged use may result in superinfection; caution in seizure disorder; may cause antibiotic-associated colitis

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • May be acceptable during pregnancy
  • Lactation
    • Excretion in milk unknown; use with caution
