Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is used for reducing colostomy, ileostomy, or incontinence odor.

• Chlorophyll is available under the following different brand names: Derifil, Chloresium, and PALS.

Adult and Pediatric Dosage Forms and Strengths

Tablet

• 10 mg
• 20 mg
• 100 mg

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Fecal Odor with Colostomy, Ileostomy, or Incontinence

• Adults: 100-200 mg/day orally; may increase to 300 mg if needed
• Children over 12 years: 100-200 mg/day orally; may increase to 300 mg if needed
• Alternatively, tablets may be placed in ostomy receptacle instead of taken orally

Side effects of chlorophyll include:

• Gastrointestinal (GI) cramping
• Diarrhea
• Stains stools dark green

Warnings

• This medication contains chlorophyll. Do not take Derifil, Chloresium, or PALS if you are allergic to chlorophyll or any ingredients contained in this drug
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately

Cautions

• Decrease dose if gastrointestinal (GI) cramping or diarrhea occurs.

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use chlorophyll with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done
• The effects of Chlorophyll during lactation are unknown
• Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should seek the advice of a health professional before using over-the-counter (OTC) drugs
