Coal Tar Shampoo

Coal tar shampoo is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used for scalp psoriasis and seborrhea.

Coal tar shampoo is available under the following different brand names: Neutrogena T/Gel Original, DHS Tar, Doak Tar, Ionil T Plus, PC-Tar, Pentrax, Polytar Shampoo, TeraGel, and Zetar.

Shampoo

• 1-5%

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Scalp Psoriasis and Seborrhea

• Apply to wet hair/scalp, lather for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly and repeat
• Application frequency depends on severity (two times/week to once daily)

Seborrheic Dermatitis (Cradle Cap)

• Age under 2 years: Safety and efficacy not established
• 2 years and older: As adults; apply to wet hair/scalp, lather for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly and repeat
• Application frequency depends on severity as directed by physician

Side effects of coal_tar_shampoo include:

• Stinging/burning of scalp
• Skin peeling
• Coal tar may cause discoloration or staining

Warnings

This medication contains coal tar shampoo. Do not take Neutrogena T/Gel Original, DHS Tar, Doak Tar, Ionil T Plus, PC-Tar, Pentrax, Polytar Shampoo, TeraGel, or Zetar if you are allergic to coal tar shampoo or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
