Was prescribed colchicine 0.6 mg for recurrent pericarditis. Had taken the tablet version previously, but new insurance would only approve Mitigare 0.6 mg capsules. Had tolerated the previous tablets well, thought name brand version should be fine. Promptly encountered severe abdominal cramping, gas and diarrhea, intermittent but often. Some days quite debilitating. Completed thirty day regimen, purchased 0.6 tablets out of pocket. Been using tablets over a week, experiencing normal intestinal function. Researched ingredients of both, looking for possible allergens. Found filler in capsules to have lactose as a substantial ingredient. I know I have some intolerance to lactose, but usually just excess gas. Contacted manufacturer of Mitigare, explained issue, requested what quantity of lactose is in their capsule product. They confirmed lactose is in Mitigare capsule, but refused to give any quantity present. If you have any issues with lactose, and have been prescribed 0.6 mg colchicine, I recommend pursuing the tablet version, and avoiding the misery I experienced with the lactose-laden Mitigare capsules.

2 experiences with Mitigare: 1) in 2013, doses were higher and I had an allergic reaction of "muscle weakness" and no noticeable gout relief. 2) in 2018, tried it again, lower dosage, and definitely got relief within 24-hours on 2 separate occasions (trying it again tonight, 20190201). Big concerns over cost of this drug with and without insurance.
