What Is Collagenase and How Does It Work?

Collagenase is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of Dermal Ulcers.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Collagenase?

Common side effects of Collagenase include:

  • pain or a burning feeling in the affected area, or
  • temporary redness or irritation in the skin around the affected area.

Serious side effects of Collagenase include:

  • fever,
  • chills,
  • fast breathing (hyperventilation),
  • fast heartbeat,
  • warm skin, or
  • weakness.

Rare side effects of Collagenase include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of Collagenase?

Adult dosage

Ointment

  • 250 units/g

Dermal Ulcers

  • Apply once a day directly to the wound or to a sterile gauze pad, which is then applied to the wound and properly secured; apply more frequently if the dressing becomes soiled; terminate use of collagenase ointment when debridement of necrotic tissue is completed and granulation tissue well established

Cautions

  • Efficacy will be adversely affected by detergents, denaturants, extreme pH & certain heavy metal ions
  • May cause slight transient erythema in surrounding tissues
  • Monitor patients for the possibility of systemic bacterial infections; debriding enzymes may increase the risk of bacteremia
  • For external use only; avoid contact with the eyes

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy.

Lactation:

  • Excretion in milk unknown
