What Is Yucca and How Does It Work? Dosage

Yucca suggested uses when taken orally include osteoarthritis, high blood pressure (hypertension), migraine headaches, colitis, high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), stomach disorders, diabetes, poor circulation, and liver and gallbladder disorders

  • Yucca suggested uses when used topically include sores, skin diseases, inflammation, bleeding, sprains, broken limbs, joint pain, baldness, and dandruff
  • There is unreliable clinical evidence for use of yucca in the treatment of osteoarthritis
  • Yucca may reduce hypercholesterolemia and high blood pressure (hypertension) along with diet and exercise
  • Yucca is available under the following different brands and other names: Adams needle, aloe yucca, bear grass, dagger plant, Joshua tree, Mohave yucca, Our Lord's candle, soapweed, and Spanish bayonet

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Yucca?

Common side effects of yucca include:

  • Stomach upset
  • Bitter taste
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loose stools (high doses)

Not enough is known about the safety of taking yucca by mouth long-term or applying it to the skin.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of an overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Cautions
