Crotamiton Topical is a prescription medication used to treat symptoms of scabies and pruritus.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Crotamiton Topical?

Common side effects of Crotamiton Topical include:

  • mild itching or new rash.

Serious side effects of Crotamiton Topical include:

  • hives,
  • difficult breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • severe burning, stinging, or irritation after using this medicine.

Rare side effects of Crotamiton Topical include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of the Crotamiton Topical?

Adult dosage

Cream/lotion

  • 10 %

To treat itching:

Adult dosage

  • Massage the medicine into the affected areas until it is completely absorbed. Repeat as needed.

To treat scabies

Adult and pediatric dosage

  • Apply a thin layer of the cream or lotion to all body parts from the neck down to the soles of your feet (scabies does not usually infect the head).

Cautions

  • Crotamiton Topical is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
  • Do not take it by mouth. Crotamiton Topical is for use only on the skin. Do not use this medicine on swollen or oozing skin. If this medicine gets in your eyes or mouth, rinse with water.
  • The sedative effects of flurazepam may last longer in older adults. Accidental falls are common in elderly patients who take benzodiazepines. Use caution to avoid falling or accidental injury while you are taking flurazepam.
  • Parasite infestations are highly contagious. Using this medicine will not prevent you from passing scabies to other people. Avoid sexual or intimate contact until the infestation has cleared up. Also avoid sharing hair combs, hair accessories, hats, clothing, bed linens, and other articles of personal use.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
  • Lactation
    • It is not known whether crotamiton topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.
