What Is Cyclizine and How Does It Work?

Cyclizine is an over-the-counter medication used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting and vertigo associated with motion sickness

  • Cyclizine is available under the following different brand names: Marezine, Bonine for Kids, Cyclivert

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Cyclizine?

Common side effects of Cyclizine include:

  • Feeling drowsy
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Constipation

Serious side effects of Cyclizine include:

  • Hives. 
  • Difficult breathing. 
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Painful or difficult urination.
  • Little or no urinating.
  • Pounding heartbeats or fluttering in the chest; or
  • A light-headed feeling.

Rare side effects of Cyclizine include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Cyclizine?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Tablet

  • 25 mg
  • 50 mg

Tablet, chewable

  • 25 mg

Motion Sickness

Adult and geriatric dosage

  • 50 mg orally taken 30 minutes before departure, may repeat in 4-6 hours if needed, up to 200 mg/day

Pediatric dosage

  • Children between 6-12 years: 25 mg orally up to 3 times/day; not to exceed 75 mg/day
  • Children above 12 years: 50 mg orally taken 30 minutes before departure, may repeat in 4-6 hours if needed, up to 200 mg/day

If your medical doctor is using this medicine to treat your pain, your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor, health care provider, or pharmacist first.

What Are Warnings and Precautions for Cyclizine?

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Do not use in patients with asthma, glaucoma, emphysema, chronic pulmonary disease, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, or difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate gland unless directed by a doctor
  • Cyclizine should not be used concurrently with sedatives, tranquilizers, or anticholinergic medications

Cautions

  • May have hypotensive effects, which may be confusing or dangerous in postoperative patients
