What Is Cytomegalovirus immune globulin (CMV IG) and How Does It Work?

Cytomegalovirus immune globulin (CMV IG) is a prescription medication used for prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus disease associated with transplantation of kidney, lung, liver, pancreas and heart.

  • CMV IG is available under the following different brand names: CytoGam, CMV IG.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Cytomegalovirus immune globulin (CMV IG)?

Common side effects of CMV IG include:

  • Chills,
  • Mild nausea,
  • Vomiting,
  • Joint pain,
  • Back pain,
  • Muscle cramps, and
  • Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling)

Serious side effects of CMV IG include:

  • Hives,
  • Difficulty breathing,
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • Wheezing,
  • Dizziness,
  • Lightheadedness,
  • Blue lips,
  • Pale or blue-colored appearance in the fingers or toes,
  • Pale or yellowed skin,
  • Dark-colored urine,
  • Confusion,
  • Weakness,
  • Swelling,
  • Rapid weight gain,
  • Little or no urinating,
  • Chest pain,
  • Severe shortness of breath,
  • Cough with foamy mucus,
  • Fast or uneven heart rate,
  • High fever,
  • Fly symptoms,
  • Mouth sores,
  • Severe headache,
  • Neck stiffness,
  • Increased sensitivity to light,
  • Nausea,
  • Vomiting,
  • Sudden numbness or weakness,
  • Slurred speech,
  • Problems with vision or balance,
  • Sudden cough,
  • Rapid breathing,
  • Coughing up blood, and
  • Pain, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or both legs.

Rare side effects of CMV IG include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Cytomegalovirus immune globulin (CMV IG)?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Injectable solution

  • 50±10 mg/mL (50 mL)

Cytomegalovirus Prophylaxis

Adult dosage

  • Kidney Transplant
    • 150 mg/kg intravenous infusion within 72 hours of transplant, then 100 mg/kg 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks posttransplant, THEN 50 mg/kg 12 & 16 weeks posttransplant 
  • Liver, Pancreas, Heart, and Lung Transplant
    • 150 mg/kg Intravenous infusion within 72 hours of transplant & 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks posttransplant, THEN 100 mg/kg 12 & 16 weeks posttransplant

What Other Drugs Interact with Cytomegalovirus immune globulin (CMV IG)?

If your medical doctor is using this medicine to treat your pain, your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor, health care provider, or pharmacist first.

  • CMV IG has serious interactions with the following drugs:
    • axicabtagene ciloleucel
    • brexucabtagene autoleucel
    • ciltacabtagene autoleucel
    • idecabtagene vicleucel
    • lisocabtagene maraleucel
    • tisagenlecleucel
  • CMV IG has moderate interactions with the following drugs:
    • BCG vaccine live.
    • efgartigimod alfa
    • measles (rubeola) vaccine
    • measles mumps and rubella vaccine, live
    • measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine, live
    • rubella vaccine
    • smallpox (vaccinia) vaccine, live
    • varicella virus vaccine live.
  • CMV IG has minor interactions with no other drugs.

Cautions

  • Made from human donors, so the theoretical risk of pathogen transmission.
  • Contains sucrose as a stabilizer, associated with a higher risk of IV immune globulin-related renal dysfunction.
  • Possibility of other adverse reactions associated with IV immune globulins, g, aseptic meningitis syndrome, transfusion-related acute lung injury.
  • Renal impairment
