HOW DO DIAGNOSTIC ANTIMICROBIALS WORK?
Tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) or Mantoux test belongs to the class of diagnostic antimicrobials and is used to identify tuberculosis infection. It helps to minimize the risk of transmission of infection by early detection and treatment.
PPD is a cell-free purified protein fraction obtained from a human strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When the mycobacterium invades the body, the immune system sends antibodies to attack these microbes. After three to eight weeks, these antibodies enter the bloodstream and then circulate for years. When tuberculin PPD is given, these antibodies react to the purified protein fraction and cause a local reaction.HOW ARE DIAGNOSTIC ANTIMICROBIALS USED?
Diagnostic antimicrobials are used to identify tuberculosis infection in people who are at an increased risk of developing active disease.
