What Is Dimethyl Sulfoxide and How Does It Work?

Dimethyl Sulfoxide is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of interstitial cystitis.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Dimethyl Sulfoxide?

Common side effects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide include:

  • bladder pain or discomfort,
  • garlic-like taste in the mouth, and
  • odor from the breath or skin

Serious side effects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide include:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • vision changes,
  • severe dizziness, and
  • itching.

Rare side effects of Dimethyl Sulfoxide include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Dimethyl Sulfoxide?

Adult dosage

Intravesicular solution

  • 50%

Interstitial Cystitis

Adult dosage

  • Instill 50 mL intravesicularly into the bladder and allow to remain for 15 minutes; repeat every 2 weeks until symptom relief
  • After maximum symptomatic relief is achieved, may decrease the frequency

Cautions

  • Urinary tract malignancy
  • Risks of: anaphylactic reactions; transient chemical cystitis
  • Potential risk of eye lens opacity
  • Not for IV or IM use; intravesicular use only
  • Use caution in patients with urinary tract malignancy (vasodilatory effects may be harmful)

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks during pregnancy.
