Econazole Topical

Econazole Topical is a prescription medication used for the treatment of tineal fungal infections and cutaneous candidiasis.

Common side effects of Econazole Topical include:

• application site reactions such as burning, stinging, itching, or redness of the skin

Serious side effects of Econazole Topical include:

• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• rash,
• itching, and
• severe dizziness

Rare side effects of Econazole Topical include:

• none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

Tinea Fungal Infections & Cutaneous Candidiasis

Adult dosage

• Tinea pedis, cruris, corporis, Versicolor: Apply cream to the affected area(s) every day
• Cutaneous candidiasis: Apply cream to the affected area(s) twice daily
• Treatment duration
  • Tinea cruris, corporis, Versicolor, cutaneous candidiasis: Apply for  2 weeks
  • Tinea pedis: Apply for 4 weeks

Pediatric dosage

• Age less  than 3 months: Safety and efficacy not established
• Tinea pedis, cruris, corporis, Versicolor: Apply cream to the affected area(s) every day
• Cutaneous candidiasis: Apply cream to the affected area(s) twice daily
• Treatment duration
  • Tinea cruris, corporis, Versicolor, cutaneous candidiasis: Apply for  2 weeks
  • Tinea pedis: Apply for 4 weeks

Interdigital Tinea Pedis

Adult dosage

• Ecoza: Apply foam Topically to the affected area(s) every day for 4 weeks

Pediatric dosage

• Aged below 12 years: Safety and efficacy not established
• Aged above 12 years (Ecoza): Apply foam Topically to the affected area(s) every day for 4 weeks

Cautions

• Foam dosage form is flammable, avoid the heat, flame, and smoking during and immediately following application
• Foam contents under pressure; do not puncture and/or incinerate the containers
• Do not expose foam containers to heat and/or store them at temperatures above 120°F (49°C) even when empty
• Do not store in direct sunlight

Pregnancy & Lactation

• There are no available data on therapy use in pregnant women to evaluate a drug-associated risk of major birth defects, miscarriage, or adverse maternal or fetal outcomes.
• In animal reproduction studies, econazole nitrate did not cause malformation in mice, rabbits, and/or rats at oral doses 80 or 40 times the human dermal dose
• Lactation
  • There is no information available on the presence of the drug in human milk, the effects of the drug on the breastfed infant, or on milk production after Topical application of the drug to women who are breastfeeding
  • Not known whether the product is excreted in human milk; because many drugs are excreted in human milk, exercise caution when the drug is administered to a nursing woman
  • Consider the developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding along with the mother’s clinical need for therapy and any potential adverse effect on the breastfed infant from the drug or maternal condition
