Fampridine

Fampridine is designated for orphan use for multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury.

Fampridine is available under the following different brand names: Neurelan.

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Multiple Sclerosis (Orphan)

• Data limited
• Fampridine-SR: 10 mg orally every 12 hours

Spinal Cord Injury (Orphan)

• Data limited
• 9-15 mg/hour continuous intravenous (IV) infusion for approximately 2 hours, OR
• 24 mg total cumulative dose, administered as 2 mg IV every 20 minutes (slow IV push or continuous infusion)

Renal Impairment

• 90% excreted unchanged
• Decrease dose (specific guidelines unavailable)

Safety/efficacy not established in pediatric patients.

Side effects of fampridine topical include:

• Seizures (dose-dependent)
• Acute confusional episodes
• Anxiety
• Agitation
• Restlessness
• Weakness/lethargy
• Back pain
• Numbness and tingling
• Dizziness
• Gait instability
• Insomnia
• Sweating
• Injection site pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Dry mouth
• Abdominal pain
• Increased mean arterial pressure

Warnings

This medication contains Fampridine. Do not take Neurelan if you are allergic to fampridine or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to fampridine or 3,4-diaminopyridine
• History of seizures

Pregnancy and Lactation

The effects of fampridine use during pregnancy are not known. Avoid pregnancy while using fampridine.

It is not known whether fampridine is distributed in breast milk. Do not breastfeed while using fampridine.
