Does sodium oxybate interact with foods or drinks?Sodium oxybate is usually taken at bedtime and then again a few hours later. You should not take the first nightly dose of sodium oxybate with food. Wait at least two hours after eating before taking your first nightly dose of sodium oxybate. Taking it with food can reduce the amount of sodium oxybate that your body absorbs. This can cause the medicine to not work as well. Sodium oxybate has a lot of salt (sodium) in it. If you are sensitive to salt or follow a low-salt diet, talk to your health care provider about ways to limit salt intake from foods and drinks while you are taking sodium oxybate.Do not drink alcohol or take any medicines containing alcohol while taking sodium oxybate. Call your health care provider right away or go to the nearest emergency room if you have any of the following serious symptoms.Sudden confusion or feeling disorientedFeeling paranoidSuicidal thoughts or actionsSeizuresTrouble breathingBreathing Problems - Sodium oxybate may cause slow or shallow breathing, especially if you have breathing problems from another condition or take other medicines that can slow your breathing. It can also cause sleep apnea, which is when your breathing stops and starts while you are asleep. Tell your health care provider if you have any breathing problems, especially when you start sodium oxybate or if your dose is increased. Also tell your health care provider if you or anyone else notices that you have symptoms of sleep apnea, such as snoring or waking up suddenly after gasping or choking. What should I do if I accidentally use too much sodium oxybate?If you or someone else has used too much sodium oxybate, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.What should I do if I miss a dose of sodium oxybate?Sodium oxybate is usually taken in two separate doses. The second dose is taken about two and one-half to four hours after the first dose. If the second dose is missed, skip it. Do not take sodium oxybate until the next night. Do not take double or extra doses. Never take two doses at the same time. If you have any questions about missed doses, talk to your health care provider.

People with this condition are not able to break down sodium oxybate in the body. What should I know about sodium oxybate before using it?Sodium oxybate is only available through a special program, from certain pharmacies, and to certain people. It is important that you keep all of your appointments, including labs or other testing, while taking sodium oxybate. Take it as prescribed. Do not change your dose of sodium oxybate without talking to your health care provider.Do not share sodium oxybate with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.Keep sodium oxybate out of the reach of children and pets. Sodium oxybate is a controlled substance because it can be misused or lead to dependence. Store sodium oxybate in a safe place to protect it from theft. It is illegal to sell or give away this medicine.Sodium oxybate should be mixed with water before you take it. Read and follow the “Instructions for Use†that come with your medicine to make sure you understand how to prepare and use it properly. If your sodium oxybate directions are to take more than one dose in a day, you should prepare both doses at the same time. Once a sodium oxybate dose has been mixed, you must take it within 24 hours. If it is not taken within 24 hours, it should be thrown away by pouring it down a sink drain.Use the dosing syringe that comes with your medicine to measure your dose. A household spoon is not an accurate measuring device and may cause you to take the wrong dose. Ask your pharmacist how to measure and take your medicine properly.Sodium oxybate should be taken while you are in bed. You will likely fall asleep very soon after taking it, usually within five to 15 minutes. Sometimes you may fall asleep suddenly, without even noticing that you are sleepy. Because of this, you should stay in bed and lie down right away after taking it. This will reduce your risk of falling or hurting yourself if you fall asleep suddenly.People who are 65 or older can be at greater risk for some side effects from sodium oxybate.
