What Is Gadobenate dimeglumine and How Does It Work?

Gadobenate dimeglumine is a contrast agent used to help diagnose certain disorders of the brain and spine (central nervous system). This medication is also used to diagnose atherosclerosis (clogged arteries).

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Gadobenate dimeglumine?

Common side effects of Gadobenate dimeglumine include:

  • headache.
  • nausea; or
  • unusual or unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Serious side effects of Gadobenate dimeglumine include:

  • hives. 
  • difficult breathing. 
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • burning, itching, swelling, scaling, and tightening or hardening of the skin.
  • muscle weakness.
  • joint stiffness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet.
  • deep bone pain in the ribs or the hips.
  • trouble moving; or
  • skin redness or discoloration.
  • kidney problems--little or no urinating; painful or difficult urination; swelling in the feet or ankles; feeling tired or short of breath.
  • a seizure (convulsions).
  • pounding heartbeats or fluttering in the chest.
  • breathing problems; or
  • pain, burning, swelling, blistering, or skin changes at the injection site.

Rare side effects of Gadobenate dimeglumine include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Severe eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Severe heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of Gadobenate dimeglumine?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Intravenous solution

  • 529 mg/Ml

CNS imaging:

Adult dosage

  • IV: 0.1 mmol/kg (0.2 mL/kg).

Pediatric dosage

  • Infants and Children below 2 years of age:
  • IV: 0.1 to 0.2 mL/kg (0.05 to 0.1 mmol/kg); may begin imaging immediately after administration.

Children above 2 years and Adolescents:

  • IV: 0.2 mL/kg (0.1 mmol/kg); may begin imaging immediately after administration.

Renal and aorto-iliofemoral vasculature imaging:

Adult dosage

  • IV: 0.1 mmol/kg (0.2 mL/kg); calculate scan delay with test bolus (1 to 2 mL) or with automatic detection technique.

Cautions

  • Gadobenate dimeglumine can cause a life-threatening condition in people with advanced kidney disease. You should not receive this medication if you have kidney disease or if you are on dialysis.
  • Gadobenate dimeglumine can stay in your body for months or years after you receive this medicine. It is not known whether this could cause any health problems in people whose kidneys work properly. Tell your doctor if you have had repeated scans with a contrast agent, and provide the date of your last scan.

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • It is not known whether this Gadobenate dimeglumine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.

Lactation

  • It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this gadobenate dimeglumine. Ask your doctor about any risks.
