How Do CCB-Renin Inhibitor Combos Work?

Calcium channel blocker/renin-angiotensin system inhibitor (CCB/renin inhibitor) combos are antihypertensive drugs used to reduce high blood pressure (hypertension).

CCBs also known as calcium channel antagonists work by blocking the entry of calcium into the cells through voltage-gated calcium channels present in the smooth muscle of arteries. This causes dilation of the arteries, an increase in the free flow of blood, and a subsequent reduction in blood pressure.

Renin inhibitors or direct renin inhibitors affect the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. They work by directly inhibiting proteolytic enzyme renin released by the kidney and prevent renin from converting angiotensin to angiotensin I, which further converts into angiotensin II. In the absence of angiotensin II, the blood pressure decreases as the blood vessels remain dilated and the flow of blood is maintained.

CCB/renin inhibitor combos are used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).
