Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin

Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin is a combination medication used for the treatment of acute otitis externa.

Common side effects of Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin include:

• itching or pain after using the ear drops;
• fussiness or irritability;
• headache; or
• stuffy nose and sore throat.

Serious side effects of Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin include:

• hives,
• difficult breathing,
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• a skin rash
• new ear drainage with severe itching

Rare side effects of Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin include:

• migraine,
• a diminished sensation of touch,
• numbness and tingling,
• fungal dermatitis,
• cough,
• rash,
• hives, and
• hair loss.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

Adult and pediatric dosage

Suspension

Acute Otitis Externa

Adult dosage

• 3 drops in the affected ear every 12 hours for 7 days

Pediatric dosage

Below 1  year

• 3 drops in the affected ear every 12 hours for 7 days

• Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin has severe interactions with the following drugs:
  • flibanserin
  • mifepristone
• Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin has serious interactions with at least 145 other drugs.
• Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin has moderate interactions with at least 424 other drugs.
• Hydrocortisone-Ciprofloxacin has minor interactions with atleast 168 other drugs.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to drugs or components
• Tympanic membrane perforation (nonsterile preparation)
• Viral infections of the external canal including varicella & herpes simplex infections

Cautions

• Not for ophthalmic use or injection
• Prolonged use may result in bacterial or fungal overgrowth
• Resistance to the product may develop
• If the infection has not improved after one week of therapy, cultures should be obtained to guide further treatment
• Discontinue at the first appearance of skin rash or any other sign of hypersensitivity; serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions, some following the first dose, reported in patients receiving systemic quinolones; serious acute hypersensitivity reactions may require immediate emergency treatment
• The dropper cap contains natural rubber (latex) which may cause severe allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy
• Lactation
