Hylan G-F 20 is a prescription medication used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Hylan G-F 20?

Common side effects of Hylan G-F 20 include:

  • warmth, redness, pain, stiffness, swelling, or puffiness at the injection site;
  • muscle pain, trouble walking;
  • fever, chills, nausea;
  • prickly feeling in the skin;
  • headache, dizziness; or
  • itching or skin irritation around the knee.

Serious side effects of Hylan G-F 20 include:

  • hives,
  • difficult breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • severe pain or swelling around the knee after the injection.

Rare side effects of Hylan G-F 20 include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.
  • Severe eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
  • Severe heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of Hylan G-F 20?

Adult dosage

Intra-articular injection (prefilled syringe)

  • 16 mg/2 mL (Synvisc)
  • 30 mg/2 mL (Orthovisc)
  • 48 mg/6 mL (Synvisc-One)
  • 88 mg/4 mL (Monovisc)
  • 24 mg/3 mL (Hymovis)
  • 25 mg/2.5 mL (GenVisc 850)
  • 25 mg/2.5 mL (Supartz FX)
  • 25 mg/2.5 mL (Visco-3)

Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Adult dosage

  • Synvisc: Inject intra-articularly 16 mg (2 mL) to the affected knee every week for 3 weeks
  • Synvisc-One: Inject intra-articularly 48 mg (6 mL) to the affected knee once as a single injection
  • Orthovisc: Inject intr-articularly 30 mg (2 mL) to the affected knee every week for 3 weeks
  • Monovisc: Inject intra-articularly 88 mg (4 mL) to the affected knee once as a single injection
  • Supartz FX, GenVisc 850: Inject 25 mg (2.5 mL) once weekly for 5 weeks; 5 injections total; some patients may benefit from a total of 3 injections
  • Hymovis: Inject 24 mg (3 mL) once weekly for 2 weeks (2 injections total)
  • Visco-3: Inject 25 mg (2.5 mL) once weekly for 3 weeks (3 injections total)

If your medical doctor is using this medicine to treat your pain, your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor, health care provider, or pharmacist first

Cautions

  • You should not receive Hylan G-F 20 if you have an infection in your knee or the skin around your knee.
  • Call your doctor once if you have severe pain or swelling around the knee after the injection.
  • Hylan G-F 20 is generally not used in anyone younger than 21.
  • For at least 48 hours after your injection, avoid jogging, strenuous activity, or high-impact sports such as soccer or tennis. Also, avoid weight-bearing activity or standing for longer than 1 hour at a time. Ask your doctor how long to wait before you resume these activities.

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • It is not known whether Hylan G-F 20 will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Lactation

  • It is not known whether Hylan G-F 20 passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.
