What Is Iodoquinol and How Does It Work?

Iodoquinol is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of an intestinal infection called amebiasis

What Are Dosages of Iodoquinol?

Adult dosage

Tablets

  • 210 mg
  • 650 mg

Intestinal Amebiasis

Adult dosage

  • 650 mg orally after meals every 8 hours for 20 days; not to exceed 2 g/day

Pediatric dosage

  • 30-40 mg /kg /day divided orally every 8 hours after meals for 20 days; not to exceed 1.95 g/day

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Iodoquinol?

Common side effects of Iodoquinol include:

  • diarrhea
  • nausea or vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • headache
  • itching of the rectal area

Serious side effects of Iodoquinol include:

  • blurred vision or any vision change.
  • clumsiness or unsteadiness.
  • decreased vision or eye pain.
  • increased weakness.
  • muscle pain.
  • numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in hands or feet.

Rare side effects of Iodoquinol include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

  • Iodoquinol has no noted moderate interactions with any other drugs.

What Are Warnings and Precautions for Iodoquinol?

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to 8-hydroxyquinoline or Iodoquinol
  • Iodine sensitivity
  • Pre-existing optic neuropathy
  • Hepatic damage

Cautions

  • Caution in thyroid disease
  • Interferes with thyroid tests for up to 6 months after discontinuation
  • Do not repeat the course before 2-3 weeks
  • Not effective in amebic hepatitis or liver abscess
  • Avoid long-term therapy (associated with optic neuritis and optic atrophy)
