What Is Lactobacillus and How Does It Work?
Lactobacillus is a type of bacteria that is considered "friendly" bacteria that normally live in our digestive, urinary, and genital systems without causing any disease. Lactobacillus restores the intestinal flora, post-antibiotic diarrhea and for prevention of post-antibiotic vulvovaginal yeast infections (candidiasis).
Numerous products available have shown effectiveness.
Lactobacillus is available under the following different brand names: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacid, and Culturelle.
Dosages of Lactobacillus
Capsules
Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:
- Lactobacillus: 1-2 capsules orally each day
- 1-10 billion colony forming units (CFU) per day orally divided in three to four times a day
- 8 oz yogurt two times a day
- Take at least 2 hours after antibiotic; continue for several days after antibiotic treatment is finished

- This medication contains Lactobacillus. Do not take Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacid, or Culturelle if you are allergic to lactobacillus or any ingredients contained in this drug.
Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

- Immunocompromised patients and patients with GI wall perforation
