What Is Latanoprost Used For?

Latanoprost is a prostaglandin analogue ophthalmic solution used to treat pressure in the eye (glaucoma, ocular hypertension) by decreasing liquid in the eye.

Latanoprost is available under the following different brand names: Xalatan.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Latanoprost?

Common side effects of latanoprost include:

  • Increase in brown pigmentation of the iris
  • Blurred vision
  • Burning/stinging/itching/redness of the eye after using the drops
  • Foreign body sensation/ feeling as if something is in the eye
  • Punctate epithelial keratopathy
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Upper respiratory tract infection/cold/flu
  • Dry eyes
  • Excessive tearing/watery eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Eyelid crusting
  • Eyelid swelling
  • Eyelid redness
  • Eyelid discomfort/pain
  • Eyelid skin darkening 
  • Eye pain when exposed to light (photophobia)
  • Chest pain (angina pectoris)
  • Muscle/joint/back pain
  • Rash/allergic skin reactions
  • Changes in eyelash number/color/length/thickness
  • Cold or flu-like symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat)

Serious side effects of latanoprost include:

  • Oozing or eye discharge
  • Chest pain
  • Vision changes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Redness, swelling, itching or pain in the eye

What Other Drugs Interact with Latanoprost?

Serious interactions of latanoprost include:

What Are Warnings and Precautions for Latanoprost?

Warnings

This medication contains latanoprost. Do not take Xalatan if you are allergic to latanoprost or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Hypersensitivity to lantanoprost, benzalkonium chloride or other components of product

Short-Term Effects

Do not give at late evening; may cause insomnia.

May impair ability to drive and/or operate heavy machinery.

Long-Term Effects

Administration of amphetamine for prolonged periods of time may lead to drug dependence and must be avoided.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use latanoprost with caution during pregnancy if benefits outweigh risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.

It is not known whether latanoprost is distributed into milk; use with caution if breastfeeding.
