What Is Lidocaine Viscous and How Does It Work?

Lidocaine Viscous is used to treat sores inside the mouth, during dental procedures to numb the gums, and to numb the mouth and throat before a surgery or medical procedure.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Lidocaine Viscous?

Common side effects of Lidocaine Viscous include:

  • unusual or unpleasant taste in the mouth; or
  • numbness in places where the medicine is accidentally applied.

Serious side effects of Lidocaine Viscous include:

  • hives,
  • difficult breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • drowsiness, depression, confusion, feeling nervous or restless;
  • weakness, slow breathing, slow heart rate;
  • a light-headed feeling,
  • numbness or cold feeling;
  • vomiting; or
  • blurred vision.

Rare side effects of Lidocaine Viscous include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of the Lidocaine Viscous?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Topical jelly

  • 2% (Xylocaine Jelly)

Topical gel

  • 0.5% (Solarcaine Aloe Extra Burn Relief)
  • 0.8% (Hawaiian Tropic Gel)
  • 3% (LidoRx)
  • 4% (Topicaine)

Topical cream

  • 2% (Xolido)
  • 4% (AneCream, LidoStat, LMX4, Xolido)
  • 5% (AneCream5)

Topical ointment

5%

Topical lotion

  • 3%

Topical spray

  • 2% (Regenecare HA)
  • 4% (Derma Numb, Lidocoll)
  • 10mg/spray (Epic, Premjact, Promescent)

Topical solution, mouth/throat

  • 2%
  • 4% (Xylocaine Solution)

Anesthetic Lubricant for Intubation

Adult and pediatric dosage

  • Jelly (2%): Apply a moderate amount to the external surface of the endotracheal tube shortly before use
  • Ointment: Apply to the tube before intubation
  • Not to exceed 600 mg/12 hr

Urethral Surface Anesthesia

Adult dosage

  • Females: Instill 2-5 mL jelly (60-100 mg) into urethra
  • Males: Slowly instill 15 mL (300 mg lidocaine) into the urethra or until the patient experiences tension

Premature Ejaculation

Adult dosage

  • Epic, Premject, Promescent: Apply 3 or more sprays (10 mg/spray), not to exceed 10 sprays, to the head and shaft of the penis before intercourse

Skin Irritation

Adult and pediatric dosage

  • Aged above two years old: Apply topically to the affected area three or four times a day

Cautions

  • Do not use this medicine to treat teething pain in a baby. Death can occur from the use of this medicine in very young children.
  • Use the smallest amount of this medicine needed to numb or relieve pain. Do not use large amounts of lidocaine Viscous.
  • An overdose of numbing medication can cause fatal side effects if too much of the medicine is absorbed through your gums and into your blood.
  • Avoid eating, chewing gum, or drinking hot liquids until the feeling in your mouth has returned completely. Chewing while your mouth is numb could result in a bite injury to your tongue, lips, or inside of your cheek.
  • Do not allow this medicine to come into contact with your eyes. If it does, rinse with water.
  • Avoid using other medications on the areas you treat with lidocaine Viscous unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Improper use of lidocaine Viscous may result in death.
  • Avoid eating within 1 hour after using this medicine inside your mouth or throat. You may have trouble swallowing and choking could occur, especially in a child.
