Malt Soup Extract

Malt soup extract is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used to treat constipation.

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Tablets

• Adults: 4 tablets orally every 6 hours, with liquid
• Not recommended in children

Powder or Liquid

• Adults: 2 tablespoons orally every 12 hours for 3-4 days, then 1-2 tablespoons at night, 8 oz of fluid taken with each dose
• Children: 1-2 tablespoon in milk or cereal orally once daily or every 12 hours for 3-4 days, then 1-2 tablespoons at night, 8 oz of fluid taken with each dose
• Children over 1 month old: 1-2 teaspoonfuls in a single feeding

Other Indications and Uses

• Constipation

Side Effects of Malt Soup Extract include:

• Gas (flatulence)
• Stool stuck in the colon or rectum (fecal impaction)
• Excessive bowel activity

Warnings

This medication contains malt soup extract. Do not take malt soup extract if you are allergic to malt soup extract or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

• nausea/vomiting,
• bowel obstruction,
• appendicitis,
• dysphagia,
• fecal impaction,
• rectal bleeding

Cautions

• Rule out gastrointestinal (GI) obstruction/perforation before administration
• Caution with severe active ulcerative colitis

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Malt soup extract may be acceptable for use during pregnancy. Either animal studies show no risk but human studies are not available or animal studies showed minor risks and human studies were done and showed no risk.
• There is no data available regarding the use of malt soup extract while breastfeeding. Malt soup extract is not absorbed; therefore, it is unlikely to pose a risk in breastfeeding.
