What Is Meprobamate and How Does It Work?

Meprobamate is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of Anxiety.

  • Meprobamate is available under the following different brand names: Miltown. This brand name has been discontinued, however generic versions of this drug may still be available.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Meprobamate?

Common side effects of Meprobamate include:

  • Drowsiness,
  • Weakness,
  • Dizziness,
  • Spinning sensation,
  • Headache,
  • Numbness or tingling,
  • Blurred vision,
  • Nausea,
  • Vomiting, and
  • Diarrhea

Serious side effects of Meprobamate include:

  • Hives,
  • Difficulty breathing,
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • Wheezing,
  • Problems with balance or coordination,
  • Slurred speech,
  • Feelings of extreme happiness,
  • Restlessness,
  • Excitement,
  • Pounding heartbeats,
  • Fluttering in your chest,
  • Lightheadedness,
  • Swelling in the hands, ankles, or feet,
  • Sudden weakness,
  • Ill feeling,
  • Fever,
  • Chills,
  • Sore throat,
  • Mouth sores,
  • Easy bruising,
  • Unusual bleeding,
  • Burning in the eyes, and
  • Skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or body) and causes blistering and peeling

Rare side effects of Meprobamate include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of Meprobamate?

Adult dosage

Tablet: Schedule IV

  • 200 mg
  • 400 mg

Anxiety

Adult dosage

  • 1200-1600 mg/day orally divided every 6-8 hours; not to exceed 2.4 g/day

Geriatric dosage

  • Lower initial dose; adjust more gradually; 200 mg orally every 8-12 hours

Pediatric dosage

  • Children below 6 years old: Not recommended
  • 6-12 years old: 100-200 mg orally every 8-12 hours
  • Children above 12 years old: 1200-1600 mg/day orally divided every 8-12 hours; not to exceed 2.4 g/day

Preoperative Sedation

Adult dosage

  • 400 mg orally before the procedure

Pediatric dosage

  • 200 mg orally before the procedure

What Other Drugs Interact with Meprobamate?

If your medical doctor is using this medicine to treat your pain, your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor, health care provider, or pharmacist first.

  • Meprobamate has severe interactions with no other drugs.
  • Meprobamate has serious interactions with the following drugs:
    • benzhydrocodone/acetaminophen
    • calcium/magnesium/potassium/sodium oxybates
    • hydrocodone
    • metoclopramide intranasal
    • olopatadine intranasal
    • sodium oxybate
    • sufentanil SL
  • Meprobamate has moderate interactions with at least 177 other drugs.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity, allergy to related drugs (.g, carisoprodol)
  • History of porphyria

Cautions

  • Hypersensitivity may occur
  • May impair physical or mental abilities due to CNS depression
  • Secreted into breast milk; avoid during breastfeeding
  • Caution in patients with depression or suicidal tendencies
  • Caution in hepatic/renal impairment or seizure disorder

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug is available.
  • Lactation
    • Secreted into breast milk at 2-4 times plasma concentration; avoid
