Miconazole Oral

Miconazole oral is used for local treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis.

Dosage Forms and Strengths

Buccal Tablet

• 50 mg

Oropharyngeal Candidiasis

• Indicated for local treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis
• Adults and children 16 years and older Apply 50 mg buccal tab to gum region once daily for 14 consecutive days
• Children under 16 years: Safety and efficacy not established

Side effects of false unicorn root include:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Headache
• Changes in taste
• Upper abdominal pain
• Vomiting

Warnings

• This medication contains miconazole oral. Do not take Oravig if you are allergic to miconazole oral or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Cautions

• Monitor closely in patients with a history of allergic reaction to other azole antifungals; discontinue immediately at the first sign of hypersensitivity
• No formal drug interaction studies have been performed with miconazole buccal administration
• Coadministration of miconazole (topical, intravaginal, oral administration) with warfarin has resulted in enhancement of anticoagulant effect; closely monitor for evidence of bleeding, prothrombin time, and INR
• Known CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 inhibitor; although the systemic absorption is minimal and plasma concentrations are substantially lower than when given intravenously (IV), the potential for interaction with drugs metabolized via CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 (e.g., oral hypoglycemics, phenytoin, ergot alkaloids) cannot be ruled out

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use miconazole oral with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.
• It is unknown whether miconazole oral is distributed in breast milk. Caution is advised while breastfeeding.
