Milrinone

What Is Milrinone and How Does It Work?

Milrinone is a prescription medication used to treat Congestive Heart Failure.  

  • Milrinone is available under the following different brand names: Primacor IV

Dosages of Milrinone:

Adult dosage

Infusion solution, in D5W

  • 20mg/100mL
  • 40mg/200mL

Injectable solution

  • 1mg/mL

Congestive Heart Failure

Adult dosage

  • 50 mcg/kg loading dose by IV push over 10 minutes, then 0.375-0.75 mcg/kg/min IV
  • Maintenance: 1.13 mg/kg/day

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Milrinone?

Common side effects of Milrinone include:

  • headache, 
  • chest pain, and
  • dizziness

Serious side effects of Milrinone include:

  • hives, 
  • difficulty breathing, 
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and
  • chest pain, 
  • lightheadedness
  • leg cramps, 
  • constipation, 
  • irregular heartbeats, 
  • fluttering in your chest, 
  • increased thirst or urination, 
  • numbness or tingling, and
  • muscle weakness or limp feeling

Rare side effects of Milrinone include:

  • none

    • ponesimod
  • Milrinone has moderate interactions with the following drugs:
    • anagrelide
    • cilostazol
    • dichlorphenamide
    • enoximone
    • inamrinone
    • olprinone
    • riociguat
  • Milrinone has minor interactions with no other drugs

Pregnancy and Lactation

Unknown whether the drug is excreted into breast milk; use with caution; nursing is not a priority in situations where Milrinone is used.
