What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Mineral Oil Otic?

Common side effects of Mineral Oil Otic include:

  • Ear canal drainage

Serious side effects of Mineral Oil Otic include:

  • Allergic reactions, such as hives, chest pain, breathing trouble, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Loss of bowel control
  • Itching and irritation around the anus
  • Blood in stools (rare)
  • Severe bloating

Rare side effects of Mineral Oil Otic include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Mineral Oil Otic?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Otic Drops

  • 22mL

Impacted Cerumen

Adult and pediatric dosage

  • While laying on your side, gently instill 2-6 drops into the affected upright ear canal; remain in position for 10-15 minutes; repeat with other ears if needed
