Moexipril Hydrochlorothiazide

Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide is a combination medication used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

Common side effects of Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide include:

• dizziness
• lightheadedness
• drowsiness
• headache
• tiredness
• blurred vision
• dry cough as the body adjusts to the medication
• decreased sexual ability
• increased sensitivity to the sun
• muscle or back pain
• runny nose
• sleep problems (insomnia)
• diarrhea
• constipation
• upset stomach
• skin rash
• increased sweating

Serious side effects of Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide include:

• hives
• difficulty breathing
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• severe stomach pain
• lightheadedness
• eye pain
• vision problems
• little or no urination
• chest pain
• pounding heartbeats
• fluttering in the chest
• swelling
• weight gain
• shortness of breath
• pale skin
• easy bruising
• unusual bleeding
• sudden weakness
• ill feeling
• fever
• chills
• sore throat
• mouth sores
• trouble swallowing
• slow heart rate
• weak pulse
• muscle weakness
• tingly feeling
• confusion
• uneven heart rate
• extreme thirst
• increased urination
• leg discomfort
• muscle weakness
• limp feeling
• headache
• slurred speech
• severe weakness
• vomiting
• loss of coordination
• feeling unsteady
• burning in the eyes
• skin pain
• a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling

Rare side effects of Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide include:

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights
• Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out

Adult dosage

Tablet

• 7.5 mg/12.5 mg
• 15 mg/12.5 mg
• 15 mg/25 mg

Hypertension

Adult dosage

• If blood pressure not controlled with moexipril or hydrochlorothiazide monotherapy: 7.5 mg/12.5 mg, 15 mg/12.5 mg, or 15 mg/25 mg orally every day
• Increase either or both components based on clinical response
• Do not increase the hydrochlorothiazide component more often than every 2-3 weeks
• Doses above moexipril 30 mg/hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg every day have not been studied

• Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide has serious interactions with at least 50 other drugs
• Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide has moderate interactions with at least 227 other drugs
• Moexipril-Hydrochlorothiazide has minor interactions with at least 161 other drugs

Contraindications

• Anuria
• Hypersensitivity to either component or sulfonamides
• History of angioedema
• Hereditary or idiopathic angioedema
• Coadministration of neprilysin inhibitors (eg, sacubitril) with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors may increase angioedema risk; do not administer ACE inhibitors within 36 hours of switching to or from sacubitril/valsartan
• Bilateral renal artery stenosis

Cautions

• Excessive hypotension if concomitant diuretics, hypovolemia, and hyponatremia
• Risk for hyperkalemia, especially in patients with renal impairment, diabetes mellitus (DM), or those taking concomitant K+-elevating drugs
• Dual blockade of the renin-angiotensin system with angiotensin receptor blockers, ACE inhibitors, or aliskiren associated with an increased risk for hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal function changes (including acute renal failure) compared with monotherapy
• DM, fluid or electrolyte imbalance, hyperuricemia or gout, systemic lupus erythematosus, liver disease, and renal disease
• May aggravate digitalis toxicity
• Sensitivity reactions may occur with or without a history of allergy or asthma
• Biliary cirrhosis or biliary obstruction
• Apheresis (low-density lipoprotein) with dextran sulfate, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, collagen vascular disease, hemodialysis with high flux membrane, and aortic stenosis
• Myelosuppression
• Renal impairment may occur
• Neutropenia/agranulocytosis reported
• Cough may occur within the first few months
• Cholestatic jaundice may occur
• Risk for male sexual dysfunction
• Acute transient myopia and acute angle-closure glaucoma have been reported, particularly with a history of sulfonamide or penicillin allergy (hydrochlorothiazide is a sulfonamide)
• Avoid concomitant use of lithium

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during the first trimester. Use in LIFE-THREATENING emergencies when no safer drug is available during the second and third trimesters
