Molybdenum

Molybdenum is a trace mineral used to treat molybdenum deficiency. Taking molybdenum can prevent deficiency. However, it is very uncommon to have molybdenum deficiency.

Molybdenum is available under the following different brand names: Molypen.

Dosages of Molybdenum:

Adult and Pediatric Dosage Forms and Strengths

Injection solution

• 25 mcg/mL

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)

• Males or females: 45 mcg/day
• Pregnancy: 50 mcg/day
• Lactating: 50 mcg/day
• Children under 6 months: 2 mcg/day
• Children 6-12 months: 3 mcg/day
• Children 1-3 years: 17 mcg/day
• Children 3-8 years: 22 mcg/day
• Children 8-13 years: 34 mcg/day
• Children over 13 years: 43 mcg/day

Implementation in Patients Receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)

• 20 mcg/day administered in total parenteral nutrition (TPN)

Molybdenum Deficiency from Prolonged TPN Support

• 163 mcg/day added to total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for 21 days shown to be effective

Common side effects of molybdenum include:

• Gout-like symptoms (high dose)

Warnings

• This medication contains molybdenum. Do not take Molypen if you are allergic to molybdenum or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Contraindications

• Copper deficient patients
• Undiluted injection into a peripheral vein (risk of infusion phlebitis)

• Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done
