Naftifine

Naftifine is a prescription medication used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm infections.

Common side effects of Naftifine include:

• dryness or irritation of treated skin.

Serious side effects of Naftifine include:

• hives. 
• difficult breathing. 
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• severe skin irritation after applying this medicine.

Rare side effects of Naftifine include:

• none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
• Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

Tinea corporis

Adult and pediatric dosage

Tinea corporis/tinea cruris: Topical:

• Cream 1% and 2%, gel 1%: Apply to affected and surrounding area(s) once daily (cream) or twice daily (gel) until clinical resolution, typically 1 to 4 weeks; resolution may be faster with 2% cream

Tinea cruris and pedis

Pediatric dosage

• Apply to affected and surrounding area(s) once daily (cream and 2% gel) or twice daily (1% gel) until 1 week after the clinical resolution, typically for 2 to 4 weeks total; resolution may be faster with 2% formulations

Cautions

• Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.
• Naftifine topical gel should not be used on a child younger than 12 years old. Naftifine topical cream is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
• Do not take it by mouth. Topical medicine is for use only on the skin. Rinse with water if this medicine gets in your eyes or mouth.
• Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication.
• Call your doctor if the infection you are treating with naftifine topical does not improve within 4 weeks, or if it gets worse.
• Do not use bandages or dressings that do not allow air circulation over the affected area (occlusive dressings) unless otherwise directed by your doctor. A light cotton-gauze dressing may be used to protect clothing.
• Do not get this medicine in your eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina. If contact does occur, rinse with water.
• Avoid using other medications on the areas you treat with naftifine topical unless your doctor tells you to.
• Avoid wearing tight-fitting, synthetic clothing that doesn't allow air circulation. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of cotton and other natural fibers until the infection is healed.

Pregnancy and Lactation

• It is not known whether naftifine topical will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.
• Lactation
  • It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Ask your doctor about any risks.
