Naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used to treat allergic conjunctivitis.

Naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic is available under the following different brand names: Naphcon-A, Opcon-A, and Visine-A.
 

Dosage Forms and Strengths

Ophthalmic Solution

• 0.025%/0.3%
• 0.027%/0.3%

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Allergic Conjunctivitis

• Adults and children 6 years or older: Instill 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily
• Children under 6 years: Not established

Other Information

• Remove contact lenses before using
• Store at room temp; protect from light and excessive heat; use before the expiration date

Side effects of naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic include:

• Stinging/tingling sensation upon installation
• Dilated pupils
• Eye redness

Warnings

• This medication contains naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic. Do not take Naphcon-A, Opcon-A, or Visine-A if you are allergic to naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Cautions

• Cardiac disease
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)
• Narrow-angle glaucoma

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.
• It is unknown whether naphazoline/pheniramine ophthalmic is distributed in breast milk. Breastfeeding patients should weigh the benefits against the risks.
