Naphazoline/Zinc Sulfate/Glycerin Ophthalmic

Naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used for temporary relief of ocular (eye) redness caused by irritation and relief of burning or irritation caused by dry eyes.

Naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic is available under the following different brand names: Clear Eyes Cooling Comfort Itchy Eye Relief.

Dosage Forms and Strengths

Ophthalmic Solution

• 0.012%/0.25%/0.25%

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Ocular Vasoconstrictor/Decongestant

• Temporary relief of ocular redness caused by irritation and relief of burning or irritation caused by dry eyes
• 1-2 drops to the affected eye every 3-4 hours up to four times daily as needed
• Not to exceed 72 hours of use

Side effects of naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic include:

• Blurred vision
• Mild temporary stinging and/or irritation
• Dilated pupils
• Increased or decreased intraocular pressure
• Headache

Warnings

• This medication contains naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic. Do not take Clear Eyes Cooling Comfort Itchy Eye Relief if you are allergic to naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Contraindications

• Do not use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
• Narrow-angle glaucoma
• Hypersensitivity
• Stop use if vision changes, eye pain, the condition worsens

Cautions

• Use with caution in patients with hypertension, cardiovascular abnormalities, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, infection, or injury
• Rare reports of hypertension, cardiac irregularities, nervousness, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and sweating

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.
• It is unknown if naphazoline/zinc sulfate/glycerin ophthalmic is distributed in milk.
• Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should seek the advice of a health professional before using over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
