Took 2. I couldn't stay awake . Not severe fatigue. I had gone to urgent care. Both docs there AND my pcp said not normal reaction, try again . I pill same reaction. AC repairman here could not get me up. 2 days later shooting pain down RT arm into hand . Electrifying shock . Twice . Now have lost strength in index finger and thumb. Ist joint of index finger does not work !
Macrobid has put me in the ER multiple times. Initially, it was presumed it was the infection, but turns out this medication was causing uncontrollable vomiting, headache, heaving until not even any bile left. Had to be on IV fluids, and IV anti nausea medication as well. Horrible experience.
Took one pill for a UTI, started having dizziness, and stomach pain. Shortly after that I began having shortness of breath followed with heart palpitations and chest pain. Never had a reaction to any other antibiotics ever before. Did not take a second pill
I took macrobid in 2021 with no problem. I took a dose Tuesday night and developed horrible joint pain. I took another dose Wednesday and was debilitated by joint pain, headache, fatigue, nausea. I had to call off work. My UTI symptoms improved immediately though.
Like others, I was very nervous about taking this prescription when I saw the negative reviews, especially as someone who has random allergic reactions to things. Thankfully, and this is my hope for you as well, I didn’t have any adverse reactions! Took it for five days, with relief from symptoms (thank goodness) after one day. Hope this helps someone else feel more confident about taking it! (And don’t forget to take antibiotics for the full duration!!)
I was prescribed to take a 100mg pill every 12 hours. after the first pill i took, i developed an insane headache a couple hours later. i continue to take them thru to day two and didn’t really notice my uti getting any better. By the morning of day 3, the headache was INSANE, i had a fever, a sore throat, AND my uti had only gotten worse and more painful.
I took 2 doses, the first one made me nauseous and fatigued. The second one made me vomit uncontrollably for an entire day. My abdomen hurt more than it ever has. I wound up in the ER for a bag of saline and anti nausea meds and pain control.

I almost didn't take this prescription due to the negative reviews. I live alone and was terrified of an adverse reaction as others had reported. It got to the point where I finally told myself not treating the bacterial issue was riskier than taking the medication. I am on day 4 of 5 and have had no adverse side effects. I am sure, obviously and unfortunately, others have had very serious side effects, but perhaps they had underlying issues. I just figured since I've been on and off antibiotics very infrequently for over 50 years, hopefully I'd be okay. I would suggest if the negative reviews that shout out "don't take this drug" scare you, then talk to your doctor.
prescribed to take every 12 hrs for 5 days. it wasn't until after completing day 4 that my symptoms went away fully. other antibiotics like bactrim usually make my symptoms go away after day 1, but i guess i can't complain as long as they stay away. no side effects except having to pee more frequently than usual (actually having to). take with food.
I was given this medication and within 24 hours was having chest pain. I already had a small heart condition that I have checked every year. After this medication I went in to get my heart checked and the condition I have had gotten worse. The condition had not changed in over 10 years. Now I have major issues with my heart. I am having to wear a loop recorder. I am having PVC’s. I would not take this medication ever again and let my whole family know what it has caused.
Positive experience! Writing this review to hopefully calm those like me, who are desperate for relief from uti pain. After stressing about whether or not to take this antibiotic due to all of the horrible reviews I decided to take a chance. I had a chronic uti for two years and had tried everything natural I could without relief likely due to bacteria hiding in biofilm in bladder lining. I was able to take this medicine with just a yogurt prior and experienced no nausea. I took macrobid 100 mg every 12 hrs for 7 days and had no side effects, only uti symptom relief. It has been one week since finishing this med and symptoms have not returned. I tested my urine with a uti test strip and it was negative, I plan to continue testing. I took Biofilm Defense first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, waited 30 minutes, ate food, took antibiotic. In the evenings I took 2 scoops of powder D Mannose. I plan to continue D Mannose daily as a preventative and finish 60 day biofilm defense.
Macrobid made me feel very nauseous and overall unwell. It did not help with the E. coli caused UTI. This is a terrible drug and it should taken off the market!!!
DON’T TAKE THIS DRUG!!!I woke up this morning not sure if I was going to live to see another day. I am not exaggerating! My chest hurt my heart was racing to 96, I had high blood pressure, 148/98. (it’s always normal), I’ve had high stomach pain all day, my back has been hurting, I’ve had a headache, I’ve been dizzy and felt confused. I also ran a low-grade fever of 100°. No one could pay me enough to take another capsule. I took one last night and it was foolish enough to take another one this morning. I asked the PA if she would put me on Cipro since that’s what my urologist always prescribed, (I’m diabetic), but she said this was the first line antibiotic. I was cussing her all day today!
The first time I took this med I had only slight headache. However this time the side effects were awful. Started with a headache so bad it felt like it was getting squeezed in a vice. By the 2nd dose I woke up with chills, fever and my joints were sore. I took Tylenol but it didn’t help the headache pain. Then the nausea came. I didn’t get any sleep. I put Manila honey in warm water and it help alleviate the nausea. I tried Advil next, still didn’t help with headache. A cool wash cloth did relax it a bit. I then got a tightness in chest and started coughing when breathing deep After i took 3rd pill the headache was worse, I had no energy or strength to do anything and the fever and chills were coming in waves. I needed to take Musinex for my cough the second night. I stopped taking antibodic and called to have a different one be filled. Over 24 hours after last pill the headache persisted. I wish I read these reviews before taking this antibodic. This should be taken off market.

As a 75 yr old woman, I am very much aware that very few medicines are specifically tested for my age group. I’ve taken macrobid twice: first time was several months ago for a UTI; 2nd time was after a visit to a urologist. First time, I had no obvious reaction. Second time was completely different. I was given one pill to take as a preventative. Second day, I couldn’t get out of bed, splitting headache, body( no fever), stomach upset, retching and gagging. All that was after 1 bill. Today 3 days later, my chest hurts as if I’ve been coughing for days, I can’t take a deep breath. I immediately informed my Dr. Haven’t heard back from him!
I am left after 5 days (2x per day) with pain in my vaginal area, possible yeast infection - still have slight pain at end of urinating and was dizzy throughout hot and cold and couldn’t breathe several times heavy chest and shortness of breathe.
Macrobid (100mg pill twice daily, 5day course). Felt unwell for first few hours after 1st dose. Headache, felt fevered but didn’t have one. Started feeling better, frequency & urgency symptoms felt relieved for awhile, same with nausea & back pain (mild). An hour b4 next dose, I felt very ill & emotional, previous uti symptoms returned. Second dose, same symptoms as after the 1st; after 2nd dose, became gassy, & I also had random body aches, my leg and chest were sore. It hurt! Please talk to your doctor for ANY side effects you have, ESPECIALLY if they persist or don’t go away after an hour. I talked to my Dr and was taken off of macrobid after urinalysis came back clear, and was still dealing with side effects. Macrobid CAN work, but always ask your Dr if you’re worried; definitely call/see a dr if you feel any side effects that don’t go away or cause you distress. You know your body better than anyone, if you think something isn’t right while taking this, call your Dr and/or pharmacist. My headache lasted < 2hrs, but the body & chest aches lasted >5hrs, and I started having crying spells a couple hrs before 2nd dose, and around when the 3rd should’ve been. This was the first time I needed antibiotics in ~15yrs, and while I think it helped me, the side effects were distressing enough near the end that I’d rather not take them again.
