What Is Nystatin Topical and How Does It Work?

Nystatin Topical is a prescription medication used for the treatment of mucocutaneous infections and vaginal infections.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Nystatin Topical?

Common side effects of Nystatin Topical include:

  • Mild itching, and
  • Irritation

Serious side effects of Nystatin Topical include:

  • Hives,
  • Difficulty breathing,
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • Severe burning,
  • Itching,
  • Rash, and
  • Pain or irritation where the medicine is applied

Rare side effects of Nystatin Topical include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Nystatin Topical?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Cream/ointment/powder

  • 100,000 units/g

Mucocutaneous Infection

Adult and pediatric dosage

  • Apply to the affected area every 8-12 hours until healing is complete or as indicated
  • See also combo with triamcinolone

Vaginal Infections

Adult dosage

  • Insert 1 tablet/day every night until healing is complete or as indicated

Cautions

  • Discontinue immediately if signs of a hypersensitivity reaction occur
  • Discontinue if irritation occurs at the application site
  • For external use only; not for systemic, oral, intravaginal, or ophthalmic use

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy.
  • Lactation
    • Not known whether excreted in breast milk; absorption following oral use is poor; manufacturer advice caution when administering to nursing women
