Ofloxacin Otic

Ofloxacin Otic is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of infections of the ear canal, inner ear infection, and infections causing a hole in the eardrum (Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media with Perforated Tympanic Membranes).

Adult and pediatric dosage

Otic solution

• 0.3%

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media with Perforated Tympanic Membranes

Adult dosage

• Instill 10 drops twice daily for 14 days in the affected ear(s)

Pediatric dosage

• Children above 12 years: Instill 10 drops twice daily for 14 days in the affected ear(s)

Otitis Externa

Adult dosage

• Instill  10 drops every day for 7 days in the affected ear(s)

Pediatric dosage

• Children below 6 months
  • Safety and efficacy not established
• Children 6 months to 12 years
  • Instill  5 drops into the affected ear twice daily for 7 days
• Children above 12 years
  • Instill 10 drops a day for 7 days in the affected ear(s)

Acute Otitis Media with Tympanostomy Tubes

Pediatric dosage

• Children below 1 year
  • Safety and efficacy not established

Children1-12 years

• Instill  5 drops into the affected ear twice daily for 7 days

Common side effects of the Ofloxacin Otic include

• headache,
• dizziness, and
• mild ear pain or itching after using the ear drops

Serious side effects of the Ofloxacin Otic include

• hives,
• rash,
• itching,
• slow heart rate,
• weak pulse,
• fainting,
• difficulty breathing,
• slow breathing,
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• skin rash (no matter how mild),
• ear drainage or discharge, and
• worsening pain in the ear

Rare side effects of the Ofloxacin Otic include:

Cautions

• A warm solution with hands to prevent dizziness
• May result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
• Careful monitoring, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy and fluorescein staining when appropriate, may be necessary for some patients receiving topical ophthalmic ofloxacin therapy
• Not for injection or ophthalmic use
• Tendon rupture reported with systemic quinolones
