Olopatadine Ophthalmic

Olopatadine ophthalmic is a prescription and over-the-counter medicine used to treat eye itching caused by allergic conjunctivitis.

• Olopatadine ophthalmic is available under the following different brand names: Pataday, Patanol, Pazeo

Adult and pediatric dosage

Ophthalmic solution

• 0.1% (Patanol [OTC])
• 0.2% (Pataday [OTC])
• 0.7% (Pazeo)

Allergic Conjunctivitis

Adult dosage

• 0.1% solution (Patanol): 1 drop twice a day in affected eye(s) at an interval of 6-8 hours
• 0.2% solution (Pataday): 1 drop in affected eye(s) once daily
• 0.7% solution (Pazeo): 1 drop in affected eye(s) once daily

Pediatric dosage

• Children below 2 years (Pataday, Pazeo) or below 3 years (Patanol):
• Safety and efficacy not established
• Children above 3 years: 
• 0.1% solution (Patanol): 1-2 drops twice a day in affected eye(s) at an interval of 6-8 hours
• 0.2% solution (Pataday): 1 drop in affected eye(s) once daily
• 0.7% solution (Pazeo): 1 drop in affected eye(s) once daily

Common side effects of Olopatadine ophthalmic include:

• headache,
• asthenia,
• blurred vision,
• burning or stinging,
• foreign body sensation, and
• hypersensitivity.

Serious side effects of Olopatadine ophthalmic include:

• eye pain or changes in vision,
• eye itching that gets worse or lasts longer than 72 hours,
• severe burning, stinging, or irritation after using the medicine,
• signs of infection: eye swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting, or drainage, and 
• signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Rare side effects of Olopatadine ophthalmic include:

Cautions

• Do not wear a contact lens if their eye is red
• Benzalkonium chloride, a preservative in ophthalmic solution, may be absorbed by soft contact lenses
• For external use only; do not use if solution changes color or becomes cloudy, the patient is sensitive to any ingredient in the product, or to treat contact lens irritation
• Use caution when using the product; to avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of container to any surface; remove contact lenses before use; wait at least 10 min before reinserting lenses after use
• Discontinue use and see a healthcare practitioner if eye pain, changes in vision, increased redness of the eye, or itching worsens or lasts for more than 72 hours
• Keep product out of reach of children; if swallowed, contact Poison Control Center right away

Pregnancy and Lactation

• There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women
• Lactation
  • Olopatadine has been identified in the milk of nursing rats following oral administration
  • It is unknown whether topical ocular administration could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in the human breast milk
  • Exercise caution when using olopatadine hydrochloride is administered to a nursing mother
