What Is Phosphorated Carbohydrate and How Does It Work?

Phosphorated Carbohydrate is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication used to treat the symptoms of nausea or vomiting during pregnancy. It blocks signals to reach the brain that trigger the feeling of nausea and vomiting.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Phosphorated Carbohydrates?

Common side effects of Phosphorated Carbohydrate include:

  • sleepiness
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • dryness in mouth
  • constipation

Serious side effects of Phosphorated Carbohydrate include:

  • fainting
  • swelling of the face, arms, and legs
  • unusual bleeding
  • vomiting
  • weight loss
  • yellow eyes or skin

Rare side effects of Phosphorated Carbohydrate include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are Dosages of Phosphorated Carbohydrates?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Solution, oral

  • 1.87 g/1.87 g/21.5 mg/5 mL

Nausea

Adult and geriatric dosage

  • 15-30 mL orally every 15 min until vomiting stops; not to exceed 5 doses/hour

Pediatric dosage

  • Children below 2 years old: Safety and efficacy not established
  • 2-12 years old: 5-10 ml orally every 15min until vomiting stops; not to exceed 5 doses/hour
  • Children above 12 years old: 15-30 mL orally every 15 mins until vomiting stops; not to exceed 5 doses/hour

Cautions

  • On self-medication, diabetes patients should ask a healthcare provider before using
  • If symptoms reoccur, worsen, or persist, notify the healthcare provider
  • If taking above 5 doses in 1 hour see a healthcare provider
  • Do not ingest fluids at least 15 min after taking the product
