What Is RiVive?

RiVive (naloxone hydrochloride spray) is an over-the-counter opiate antagonist used for emergency treatment of opioid overdose to “revive” someone during an overdose from many prescription pain medications or street drugs such as heroin. This medicine can save a life.

What Are Side Effects of RiVive?

Side effects of RiVive are expected when a person wakes up, including:

  • shaking,
  • sweating,
  • nausea, and
  • feeling angry.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision,tunnel vision,eye painor swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
  • Severe headache,confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for RiVive

Each spray contains only one dose of naloxone 3 mg. If an overdose is suspected, administer the 1st dose of RiVive nasal spray into the nose and call 911. Watch and wait.

If the person does not wake up in 2-3 minutes after the first dose, give a second dose. It is safe to keep giving doses every 2-3 minutes until the person wakes up or emergency personnel arrive.

RiVive In Children

The recommended initial dose of RiVive Nasal Spray in adults and pediatric patients is one spray delivered by intranasal administration into one nostril.

RiVive During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Although induced withdrawal may possibly contribute to fetal stress, RiVive Nasal Spray should be used in pregnant people in the case of maternal overdose in order to save the mother’s life. Use of RiVive may cause withdrawal symptoms in an unborn baby. The baby should be examined by a healthcare provider right away after use of RiVive Nasal Spray. Breastfeeding should be encouraged in those who are stable on their opioid agonists, who are not using illicit drugs, and who have no other contraindications, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Dosage for RiVive

Instructions Prior To Dosing

Step 1: CHECK if you suspect an overdose

CHECK for a suspected overdose: the person will not wake up or is very sleepy or not breathing well

  • Yell “Wake up!”
  • Shake the person gently
  • If the person is not awake, go to Step 2

Step 2: GIVE 1 dose in the nose

  • Hold nasal spray device with thumb on plunger and a finger on each side of the nozzle
  • Insert nozzle into one nostril and press plunger firmly
  • Each nasal spray device contains only one dose of naloxone

Step 3: CALL 911

  • Get medical help immediately after giving the first dose
  • Call 911 now

Step 4: WATCH & GIVE

  • WAIT 2-3 minutes after the 1st dose to give the medicine time to work
  • If the person wakes up: Go to Step 5
  • If the person does not wake up:
    • Give a second dose of medicine using a new nasal spray device
    • It is safe to keep giving doses every 2-3 minutes until the person wakes up

  • STAY until ambulance arrives: even if the person wakes up
  • GIVE another dose if the person becomes very sleepy again
  • You may need to give all the doses in the pack
